For this week I was kind of in the mood for another look at rhetoric used in commercials, but I changed my mind half way through and decided to focus more on the product itself. I was looking at a container of dial for men at a Walmart and saw at the bottom was a little blue strip that drew my attention with the words pheromone infused. Now after further inspection of the back of the bottle the words pheromone-infused come up again with the addition of the phrase Need we say more. So after really thinking about it I came to the answer yes, yes you need to say more. The hope is that from hearing that this product contains pheromones the consumer assumes that it works well and the idea that the soap contains pheromones leads to the belief that it supposedly attracts the opposite sex, which is all good in a sense but the lack of explanation seems really misleading. The whole time I couldn’t help thinking what types of pheromones are being put in, are they coming from plants or animals, how much is being put into each container and how long does it last because “surprisingly” that was not expressed on the container. I had other though like what part of this organism were these pheromones extracted from because certain parts I don't want on my skin and my most pressing question if these are pheromones from different creatures do they even attract human women, because I don’t know about you but I don’t want stray animals following me back to my dorm room.

so this week i saw something on television that sort of just peeked my interest. i saw a large number of commercials for different medications and the thing that seemed to catch my attention the most was the phrase "the most doctor recommended medication" and  so i decided this would be fun to poke at a bit for twenty minutes. the thing was that all of these commercial seemed to run the same sort of routine. they would give their product say it was the most recommended, tell you to ask your doctor about them and then give you a long list about the many worse things that might happen from you taking their product. i don't know if this thought ran passed anybody else but maybe just maybe these companies could have become the most recommended because after somebody sees the commercial they ask their doctor for it not because it's the best thing out there but because it's the first thing they see. when you see the phrase doctor recommended the natural assumption seems to be it must be safe or it must be really helpful because doctor's are professionals, but no offense not every person that dons some scrubs is cut out to be a doctor. basically what i'm trying to get across is that if your going to put your faith in these products that you don't really know anything about except for what your physician tells you research them yourself and ask more than one doctor a second opinion never hurt anybody.

Well, so after much thought for a second i couldn't really think about what i wanted to discuss but after some time i decided to talk about the rhetoric of the oxygen safety mask. if your confused i will explain if you've ever been on a plane then you have probably seen the caution sign's on it that tell you what to do in case of a plane crash such as the one to the right of this post. As you can possibly tell there is something off putting about this photo ,yes the woman in this photo is way too calm and organized. I don't know about you but in a world where people get trampled and riots break out during black friday for 20% off at a Walmart, can someone really slowly fasten an oxygen mask to themselves and their child while not goin completely off their rocker in a plane diving towards the earth. Basically what i'm saying is the istructions give the illusion that what's happening isn't a crisis in an attempt to calm passengers down and give a sense of normalcy and relief to an otherwise bleak situation but that in my opinion is certainly not the case.
